Original Gregorian Chant from an Antiphonal, Spain, c. 1525 MUSIC on a 5 LINE STAVE – PRAYERS FOR POST EPIPHANY – PSALM 24 (King James 25)! “To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul.  In thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed...”

IM-11360: An original hand-scribed leaf from a Spanish manuscript Antiphonal on animal parchment.  The manuscript text and music (six lines of music on a five-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 450 years ago!!! This leaf measures 560 x 365 mm (22 x 14 3/8”).

ONE ILLUMINATED INITIAL IN BLUE WITH RED INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR PENWORK; ONE EXCEPTIONAL KNOT WORK (CADEL) INITIAL IN DARK BROWN INK HEIGHTENED WITH YELLOW.

This leaf continues prayers for Post Epiphany.   The illuminated “A” begins Psalm 24 (King James 25) 1-2: “Ad te domine…’’ (To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul.  In thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed). The knot-work “N” begins verse 3: “Neque…” (Neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on thee shall be confounded).

This leaf originates from Spain, c. 1525 –this leaf is from the Winter Volume (pars hiemalis) which comprised the Offices of Advent, Christmastide and Epiphany.   This is an original, not a reproduction, and its condition is shown in the photos. As is usual with Medieval and Renaissance parchment, the hair side of the leaf is darker than the flesh side, but may take ink somewhat better.  The differences in tone caused scribes to arrange their quires so that the hair side of one sheet faced the hair side of the next, and the flesh side faced the flesh side. There is some staining and a bit of wear to the text on this leaf. There is original stitching in the center of the lower margin – still with original thread!

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline. They were used by priests, monks and nuns in churches and religious enclaves. The large size allowed them to be seen by multiple members of a choral section.

This leaf comes with a Certificate of Authenticity .
