The rich history of the grape in Italy no doubt contributed to the Vernaccia di San Gimignano being the first grape variety in Italy to gain DOC status in 1966, after the system was established in 1963; therefore, before illustrious names such as Barolo and Brunello. Vernaccia has always been famous in this neck of the woods, and there are references to a local Vernaccia wine dating back to the Middle Ages. Cesani makes some of the best wines of all the San Gimignano area. These days Cesani is in the firm hands Letizia Cesani, and the wine is made with the assistance of oenologist Paolo Caciorgna, “… one of Italy’s least known but very best winemakers” (Ian D’Agata, Anteprima Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2008). The grapes for their wines come from Cesanis sloping vineyards that sit higher than nearly everyone elses land in the area, and the cooler microclimate guarantees wines of bright acidity and fresh, crisp aromas and flavours. More important still, Cesani’s vineyards are located in the sub-area of Pancole, which characteristically yields the most intensely flavourful Vernaccia di San Gimignano of all. All of Cesani’s Vernaccia wines are mineral and clean, displaying great precision and freshness while the barrel fermented Sanice selection is complex and riper, without losing any of the the minerality and freshness typical of the Vernaccia grape and the Cesani house style.
