FLIGHT & BARR ROYAL WORCESTER
THISTLE TRIO SET
c.1795
Flight Barr Worcester true ‘trio’
i.e. matching teacup, coffee cup
and one large saucer.
This is what was originally
known as a trio – these
days this term refers to
a teacup, saucer and
side plate set.
Part of a much more extensive
Georgian afternoon tea
and coffee set
(see photos).
This listing is for one trio.
All three pieces have Wrythen
fluted moulding
(i.e. twisted ribbed design to body)
All pieces are decorated with the
same glorious cobalt blue bands
with hand applied pure gold leaf
design and the lovely gold thistles
that just gleam in the light.
Incised B mark underneath
which dates them to between
1792 – 1807
Very faint ‘B’ underneath each piece
which I have shown in one photo with
autocorrecting as they are very
hard to see.
This tea and coffee set mainly dates to
the late 1700s or very early 1800s except
for six identical saucers (listed separately)
that have been added about 100 years later –
possibly to extend the setting so you could
serve tea and coffee together and they would
then have enough saucers.
I can find no evidence that Royal Worcester
continued making this pattern into the early
20th century so it is possible the owners
commissioned Royal Worcester to make
the six later saucers expressly for them.
Regrettably we have to split it all up
to sell as trying to pack so many fragile
pieces of porcelain to withstand being
sent through the post together would not
only be a nightmare but the cost to the
purchaser would be exorbitant.
If anyone in Australia is interested
in a large number of pieces or the
whole set we would be happy to
negotiate a more attractive purchase
price and help get a good Carrier to
deliver them when next going to your
area which should be cheaper and
safer than by post.
CONDITION
All three pieces are in very
good original antique condition.
No chips, cracks, crazing or
restoration.
All ping well when tapped.
A few faint surface usage marks
to saucer.
A little wear to gold gilding on
the high points on the rims mainly
but really all three are in extremely
good condition especially for being
200+ years old.
Teacup has three dark marks
in an even triangular configuration
that have to be stilt marks from the
firing process as all but two of the
teacups have them to some degree.
They must have fired the cups upside
down on a three pronged kiln stilt
(support system) so they didn’t
collapse in the kiln.
You often see stilt marks underneath
a plate or something large like that.
This is the first time I have come
across them inside a cup but this
is what they must be.
Tiniest amount of kiln grit inside
teacup and almost nothing
in the coffee cup - see photos.
Kiln grit is a common occurrence
in this English soft-paste porcelain
and pottery production in general
at this time.
Most of the teacups and some of the
other pieces in this set have it
to some degree.
Any little brown dots and/or
unevenness to the foot rim
of any piece is all original
and how this soft-past
porcelain comes out of the kiln.
