Many of them have achieved cult-like status - and since Netflix is now bubbling with Israeli films, you can enjoy most of them, even if you don’t speak a lick of Hebrew. And If awards is what you're after for when searching for the next film to watch, check out these Israeli films that have won Oscar nominations.  Israeli films not to be missed Waltz with Bashir 2008 Waltz with Bashir (2008) This powerful, animated documentary follows Israeli Ari Folman (who also directed the film) in search of his memories as a 19-year-old IDF soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War. It’s the first animated film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.  Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (2014) This film, the third in a trilogy by celebrated  brother/sister duo, Shlomi and Ronit Elkabetz, is about an unhappily married woman, Viviane Amsalem, and focuses on how difficult it can be for Jewish women to obtain a gett (divorce papers) from the religious court in Israel - resulting in a host of trials and tribulations. Gett was selected as the Israeli entry for the Academy Awards in 2014, but was not nominated, however it was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes. Zero Motivation (2014) This film received much commercial and critical success – including the award for Best Narrative Film at the Tribeca Film Festival and 12 Ophir Award nominations. It hilariously depicts female soldiers stationed at a remote army base, and is even set to be adapted for American TV by SNL alum Amy Poehler. The Band's Visit 2007 The Band's Visit (2007) An Egyptian musicians arrive by mistake to Beit Hatikva (a small town in Israel's Negev Desert). With no transportation out of the town the band settles at a restaurant owned by Dina (Ronit Elkabetz). Yossi & Jagger 2002 Yossi & Jagger (2002) A love story between two Israeli soldiers at the Israel–Lebanon border. Walk On Water (2004) Walk On Water (2004) An Israeli Mossad agent is given the mission to track down and kill an ex-Nazi officer who might still be alive, while experiencing a love triangle between two german siblings. Foxtrot 2017 Foxtrot (2017) Foxtrot is a raw, beautiful and somewhat controversial glimpse into a bereaved family as they mourn the loss of their son (a soldier who died in the line of duty), had rightfully made it onto the 2018 Best Foreign Language Film short list, giving Israel hope for their first Oscar in this category; however, Samuel Maoz's emotive film just missed the nomination despite expectations from both Israel and abroad. Mr. Gaga (2015) After years of convincing, famed Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin (who trained Natalie Portman for her Oscar-winning role in Black Swan) finally allowed cameras to document his unique talent – over a whopping eight years. Mr. Gaga follows Naharin as he travels to Japan, Holland, Sweden and Israel to work with dancers. The film takes its name from the dance technique Naharin created, and covers his personal and professional life. Mr. Gaga was nominated for awards in film festivals spanning Amsterdam to Seattle.  Broken Wings 2002 Broken Wings (2002) Broken Wings is an emotional chronology of a family torn apart by the sudden death of their patriarch. Each character struggles to come to terms with the tragedy while shifting their relationships with the other family members. The film was recognized at, among others, the Berlin International Film Festival, the Jerusalem Film Festival, and won numerous awards at the Awards of the Israeli Film Academy. Late Marriage 2001 Late Marriage (2001) Another masterpiece with talented actor Louie Ashkenazi who portrays a 31-year-old bachelor who wants to stay single. His traditional Georgian-Jewish family join forces to choose a young bride for him, with the stipulation that she must be a virgin.  Ajami (2009) Ajami (2009) Set in the Christian-and-Muslim Jaffa neighborhood, Ajami, the drama scored a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, making it the third year in a row that an Israeli film was up for an Oscar. Ajami focuses on the impoverished dynamics of the real-life community. Throughout the film, the dialogue switches between Arabic and Hebrew in a very realistic manner, while the narrator is an Israeli Arab boy, which gives Ajami that documentary-like feel.  The Kindergarten Teacher (2014) This film has won a host of  international recognition at film festivals, including the $20,000 prize for new talent at the Tapei Film Festival – though perhaps it’s not the best film to watch as new parents. The thriller follows a teacher who becomes obsessed with a 5-year-old student who is a poetic prodigy. The movie was adapted in 2018 with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Footnote 2011 Footnote (2011) Footnote is a fictitious, dramatic portrayal of the relationship between a father and his son, both of whom are professors at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University. The film received international praise for its eloquence and The New York Times noted the drama’s audacious topics of Zionism, academia, family life and “the way language functions as a bridge between the sacred and the profane”. Jellyfish (2007) Jellyfish follows three functionally depressed women in Tel Aviv: a waitress, a new bride, and a home-care worker. The unique Israeli film doesn’t touch on religion or army life, and it’s only incidental that it takes place in Tel Aviv. Jellyfish was the winner of the 2007 Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the Official Selection at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, the Official Selection at the 2008 Telluride Film Festival, and was directed by celebrated Israeli author Etgar Keret. 21 iconic Israeli movies that you must watch One of the best ways to grasp the cultural melting pot that is Israel is to sample some of its most iconic and beloved cinematic works of art. By Jessica Halfin  FEBRUARY 5, 2019, 9:08 AM A scene from Sof HaOlam Smolah (At the End of the World, Turn Left). Photo: screenshot SHARE848 TWEET SHARE COMMENT EMAIL A melting pot of many different peoples, Israeli culture can be hard to grasp fully through anything but movies. From classics films that paint a picture of what life was like for Jewish immigrants in the 1950s and ’60s, to portraits of communities often left out of the mainstream, movies let you immerse yourself in Israeli life, if only for a short while. UNCOVER ISRAEL - Get the ISRAEL21c Weekly Edition free by email Sign Up Now! This list has it all: film series immortalized in Israeli pop culture; cult comedies; wartime movies; films about religious Jews, Soviet immigrants, and Bedouin tribes; and Israeli films that have received international acclaim. Watch and enjoy as you learn a little bit more about the complicated society that is Israel. We’ve included websites where you can find the movie with English subtitles. CLASSICS “Alex is Lovesick.” Photo: screenshot Alex Holeh Ahava (Alex is Lovesick)  (1986) Following a young Polish boy around the time of his bar mitzvah celebration, “Alex Holeh Ahava” is about puppy love and hilariously eccentric families. Set during the hard economic times and uncertainty of the 1950s, this classic Israeli comedy sheds a quirky light on a newly established state, filled with new immigrants of all backgrounds just trying to find their way and make ends meet in a foreign land. The Eskimo Limon (Lemon Popsicle) Series (1978-2001) A series of raunchy slapstick comedies co-written and directed by Boaz Davidson, the Eskimo Limon series is made up of some of the most recognizable and beloved films in Israel pop-culture history. Following three friends in the 1950s and ’60s as they get into all kinds of wild predicaments, the films, including “Sapiches” (Private Popsicle) (1983), which follows the friends’ enlistment into the Israeli army, and the original movie, “Eskimo Limon” (1978), which kicks things off with a hilarious if somewhat inappropriate coming-of-age story, are two movies you’ve just got to watch if you want to be in the know. BUREKAS FILMS “Burekas films” are movies from the 1960s and ’70s that dealt with fundamental changes in Israeli society at the time, such as relations between Ashkenazi and Mizrahi Jewish immigrants. Here are two good examples of this genre. Kazablan (1974) is a classic film known as the Israeli West Side Story. Taking place in the city of Jaffa, it stars the beloved singer and actor Yehoram Gaon as the head of a local gang, who falls for a girl of Ashkenazi background. Complete with dancing and musical numbers, and tales of rival gangs, it is a must-see for anyone who wants to take a deeper look into early Israeli culture. Hagiga B’Snooker (1975) contains an immortalized scene printed on Israeli posters and sometimes hung in Israeli burekas shops of one of the main characters, Azriel (Yehuda Barkan) as he goofily tries to trick a rabbi into believing he is a religious Jew, while his mouth is filled with burekas pastry. The story involves twin brothers — one pious and one a hoodlum –who run a bar where people go to play snooker, otherwise known as “pool.” CULT COMEDIES Ahava Columbianit (Columbian Love) (2004) Forever remembered for the hilarious and bloody scene where the groom smashes the glass at his wedding and it goes directly through his foot, this comedy features many of Israel’s principal comedic actors in a story that shows the struggle of marrying someone from another culture whose family doesn’t approve of the union. Mivtza Savta (Operation Grandma). Photo: screenshot Mivtza Savta (Operation Grandma) (1999) A cult hit short comedy, “Mivtza Savta” spawned the phrase “I can’t talk about it, the enemy is listening,” as well as others that Israelis still work into conversations to this day. It is the story of three brothers from a small kibbutz in the Negev– one a jokester army officer named after a popular Israeli snack, one a nature guide, and one a cable company owner — and their joint misadventure to bring their dead grandmother to their home kibbutz to be buried. A LOOK AT ISRAEL’S VARIED CULTURES “Sand Storm.” Photo: screenshot Sand Storm  (2016) A Romeo and Juliet-style love story set in a Bedouin desert village, this all-Arabic movie is a rare look inside Israel’s Bedouin culture. The beautiful scenery, and heartbreaking love story of a girl who falls in love with a boy from a rival tribe, are just two reasons why the film was shown in film festivals across Europe.   Fill the Void (2012) “Fill the Void” launched the career of Orthodox producer Rama Burshtein. Photo: screenshot A look into the life of a Hasidic woman set to marry, until a great tragedy turns her life upside down, “Fill the Void” depicts the world of Hasidic Jews in Israel and the choices they face every day. Filmed and produced by Rama Burshtein, the first Orthodox Jewish woman to make a full-length feature film for international distribution, this piece of cinema helped pave the way for Orthodox Jewish voices in Israeli film, and for audiences to see life through a female lens.   Hakala HaSurit  (The Syrian Bride) (2004) “The Syrian Bride” shows how international conflicts affect the lives of everyday people. Photo: screenshot A story of sacrifice, “The Syrian Bride” takes place in a Druze village in the Golan Heights where a young woman is promised to a successful Syrian suitor living on the other side of the border. Prepared to leave her family behind for all time, she finds her goodbyes and subsequent wedding delayed as she must deal with the bureaucracy of two very different countries. Another film that lovingly displays an Israeli population and culture rarely committed to film, it is a testament to how international conflicts affect the lives of everyday citizens and how ordinary people can learn to rise above. Sof HaOlam Smolah (Turn Left at The End of the World) (2004) A tale of one bored French immigrant teenage girl who takes interest in an Indian family that moves to her newly developed Negev desert town, “Sof HaOlam Smolah” is a movie that touches on the heartache of new immigrants who have been placed in a magical, yet nearly impossible location in the middle of the harsh desert. A coming-of-age story of Israel in the 1960s, it is a reminder of what Israel’s pioneering immigrant populations went through in order to survive and thrive against all odds here, but also of what it feels like to be a teenage girl going through the motions of life. Late Marriage  (2001) Starring Israeli movie stars Lior Ashkenazi and Moni Moshonov, “Late Marriage” explores the traditional lifestyle of a Georgian family desperate to marry off their reluctant son, who is secretly in love with a woman of a different background. Containing the longest sex scene in Israel’s film history, “Late Marriage” is also a window into the old-world values held by this former Soviet population. Live and Become  (2005) The story of an adopted Christian Ethiopian boy posing as a Jew in Israel following Operation Moses in 1984, this award-winning French-produced film shows the touching and raw reality of an immigrant as he passes major life events, from his bar mitzvah and service as an army medic to his marriage to a woman who does not know the complete truth about his past. ARMY/WAR TIME MOVIES Givat Halfon (Halfon Hill) (1976) A scene from “Halfon Hill.” Photo: screenshot A satirical comedy centered around a group of ragtag reserve soldiers watching the Israel-Egypt border from Sinai, this classic Israeli comedy lightheartedly pokes fun at the IDF while also getting in plenty of personal shenanigans and jokes about soldiers who are just winging it as they go along. “Zero Motivation” explores the world of military “jobnikim.” Photo: screenshot Zero Motivation  (2014) Want to know what it feels like to serve in the IDF in a not so glamorous role? “Zero Motivation” shines a spotlight on jobnikim– soldiers with sometimes tragically boring desk jobs, and as is the case with the female soldiers in the film, little to zero motivation. The film itself, the work of writer/director Talya Lavie, shows the journey of one soldier hoping to be promoted to a more respectable position in the military headquarters in Tel Aviv, but mostly shows the nitty-gritty of the daily grind of army life in a tragicomic way. Late Summer Blues (1987) “Late Summer Blues” is about Tel Aviv teens about to enter the army in the early 1970s. Photo: screenshot A film that young Israelis still relate to, “Late Summer Blues” poignantly captures the hopes, fears and realities of a group of Israeli teenagers in Tel Aviv about to enlist in the IDF during the early 1970s. With a war of attrition being fought along Israel’s southern border with Egypt, the group mourns the unexpected death of a friend while protesting the war through their daily actions and in one final musical performance. The Song of the Siren (1994) “The Song of the Siren.” Photo: screenshot Called the Israeli version of “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” if not set under slightly less lighthearted circumstances, “The Song of the Siren” raked in more than all other Israeli films combined at the box office in 1994. Set against the backdrop of the 1991 Gulf War, the film focuses on love and friendships made during a time when the city of Tel Aviv was forced to shut down due to the threat of SCUD missiles fired by Iraq into Israel.     INTERNATIONAL AWARD WINNERS The Band’s Visit  (2007) A scene from “The Band’s Visit.” Photo: screenshot A movie turned Tony award-winning musical, this movie, based on the book by Itamar Moses, tells the story of the Egyptian Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra who come to Israel to play at the Arab cultural center in the central city of Petah Tikva, but whose mispronunciation of the town’s name leads them instead on one big misadventure in the fictional southern desert town of Beit HaTikva. The visitors soon learn that they are not so different from the Israelis who take them in and care for them while they wait to board the next available bus, which only reaches the remote town the following day. Waltz with Bashir (2008) “Waltz with Bashir” was nominated for an Academy Award. Photo: screenshot A trip into the world of one Israeli soldier’s PTSD stemming from his fighting in the first Lebanon War in 1982, “Waltz with Bashir” is a unique and serious animated film that explores the mind and experiences of the film’s main actor, writer, and director, Ari Folman, as he sorts his way through the events of his past. Nominated for an Oscar in the international film category, it is a dark and provocative, yet thought-provoking journey, narrated in English and Hebrew. Medurat Hashevet  (Campfire) (2004) The story of a widow and her two daughters trying to make the most of life, “Medurat HaShevet” is a beautiful award-winning film by Joseph Cedar  that takes place in the 1980s. A t a time when many Israeli settlements were first being formed in the West Bank, the mother is desperate to be excepted into a newly forming community, while the eldest daughter aims to escape her boring pious life and the youngest daughter suffers an unfortunate event while at a youth group event meant to celebrate the Lag B’Omer holiday with a large bonfire in the forest. The Cakemaker (2017) Israel’s official selection for the 2019 Oscars, “The Cakemaker” is the tale of a  young German baker who travels to Israel following his Israeli lover’s death, to secretly entrench himself into the lover’s family. A sweet tale strung together with the grief of the wife and of the baker, and a tender soundtrack composed by Dominique Charpentier, it is a beautiful portrait of life, love, and moving on after hardship. 100 best Israeli movies by elad3531 | created - 30 Jan 2013 | updated - 1 month ago | Public As the editor of the biggest movie site in Israel I decided to pick the best Israeli movies of all time, as far as I watched. Early films were mainly documentary or news roundups, shown in Israeli cinemas before the movie started.[5] In 1933, a children's book by Zvi Lieberman Oded ha-noded (Oded the Wanderer) was made into a silent film, the country's first full-length feature film for children, produced on a shoestring budget with private financing.[6] In 1938, another book by Lieberman, Me’al ha-khoravot(Over the Ruins) was turned into a 70-minute film with a soundtrack and dialogue. Lieberman wrote the screenplay himself. Produced by Nathan Axelrod and directed by Alfred Wolf, it told the story of children in a Second Temple Jewish village in the Galilee where all the adults were killed by the Romans. The children rebuild the village. Production costs came to 1,000 Palestine pounds. It failed at the box office, but is considered a landmark in the history of Israeli cinema.[7] One of the pioneers of cinema in Israel was Baruch Agadati.[8][9] Agadati purchased cinematographer Yaakov Ben Dov's film archives in 1934 when Ben Dov retired from filmmaking and together with his brother Yitzhak established the AGA Newsreel.[9][10] He directed the early Zionist film entitled This is the Land (1935).[11] State of Israel[edit] In 1948, Yosef Navon, a soundman, and Yitzhak Agadati, producer of the first Hebrew-language film with his brother, Baruch Agadati, found an investor, businessman Mordechai Navon, who invested his own money in film and lab equipment. Agadati used his connections among Haganah comrades to acquire land for a studio. In 1949 the Geva film labs were established on the site of an abandoned woodshed in Givatayim.[5] In 1954, the Knesset passed the Law for the Encouragement of Israeli Films (החוק לעידוד הסרט הישראלי). Leading filmmakers in the 1960s were Menahem Golan, Ephraim Kishon, and Uri Zohar. The first Bourekas film was Sallah Shabati, produced by Ephraim Kishon in 1964. In 1965 Uri Zohar produced the film Hole in the Moon, influenced by French New Wave films. In the first decade of the 21st century, several Israeli films won awards in film festivals around the world. Prominent films of this period include Late Marriage (Dover Koshashvili), Broken Wings, Walk on Water and Yossi & Jagger (Eytan Fox), Nina's Tragedies, Campfire and Beaufort (Joseph Cedar), Or (My Treasure) (Keren Yedaya), Turn Left at the End of the World (Avi Nesher), The Band's Visit (Eran Kolirin) Waltz with Bashir (Ari Folman), and Ajami. In 2011, Strangers No More won the Oscar for Best Short Documentary.[12] In 2013 two documentaries were nominated the Oscar for the Best Feature Documentary: The Gatekeepers (Dror Moreh) and Five Broken Cameras, a Palestinian-Israeli-French co-production (Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi). Author Julie Gray notes "Israeli film is certainly not new in Israel, but it is fast gaining attention in the U.S., which is a double-edged sword. American distributors feel that the small American audience interested in Israeli film, are squarely focused on the turbulent and troubled conflict that besets us daily."[13] In 2014 Israeli-made films sold 1.6 million tickets in Israel, the best in Israel's film history.[14] Genres[edit] Cinema of Israel List of Israeli films 1940s 1948 1949 1950s 1950 1951 1955 1956 1959 1960s 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970s 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980s 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990s 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000s 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010s 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 vte Bourekas films[edit] Bourekas films (סרטי בורקס) were a film genre popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Central themes include ethnic tensions between the Ashkenazim and the Mizrahim or Sephardim and the conflict between rich and poor.[15] The term was supposedly coined by the Israeli film director Boaz Davidson, the creator of several such films,[16] as a play-on-words, after "spaghetti Western:" just as the Western subgenre was named after a notable dish of its country of filming, so the Israeli genre was named after the notable Israeli dish, Bourekas.[citation needed] Bourekas films are further characterized by accent imitations (particularly of Jewish people originating from Morocco, Persia, and Poland); a combination of melodrama, comedy and slapstick; and alternate identities.[citation needed] Bourekas films were successes at the box office but panned by the critics. They included comedy films such as Charlie Ve'hetzi and Hagiga B'Snuker and sentimental melodramas such as Nurit. Prominent filmmakers in this genre during this period include Boaz Davidson, Ze'ev Revach, Yehuda Barkan and George Ovadiah.[citation needed] New sensitivity films[edit] The "New sensitivity films" (סרטי הרגישות החדשה) is a movement which started during the 1960s and lasted until the end of the 1970s. The movement sought to create a cinema in modernist cinema with artistic and esthetic values, in the style of the new wave films of the French cinema.[citation needed] The "New sensitivity" movement produced social artistic films such as But Where Is Daniel Wax? by Avraham Heffner. The Policeman Azoulay (Ephraim Kishon), I Love You Rosa and The House on Chelouche Street by Moshé Mizrahi were candidates for an Oscar Award in the foreign film category.[citation needed] One of the most important creators in this genre is Uri Zohar, who directed Hor B'Levana (Hole In The Moon) and Three Days and a Child. Movie theaters[edit] In the early 1900s, silent movies were screened in sheds, cafes and other temporary structures.[17] In 1905, Cafe Lorenz opened on Jaffa Road in the new Jewish neighborhood of Neve Tzedek. From 1909, the Lorenz family began screening movies at the cafe. In 1925, the Kessem Cinema was housed there for a short time.[18] In 1953, Cinema Keren, the Negev's first movie theater, opened in Beersheba. It was built by the Histadrut and had seating for 1,200 people.[19] In 1966, 2.6 million Israelis went to the cinema over 50 million times. In 1968, when television broadcasting began, theaters began to close down, first in the periphery, then in major cities. Three hundred thirty standalone theaters were torn down or redesigned as multiplex theaters.[17] Eden Cinema, Tel Aviv[edit] The Eden Cinema (Kolnoa Eden) was built in 1914 despite objections by the residents of Ahuzat Bayit, the neighborhood that became Tel Aviv. The owners, Moshe Abarbanel and Mordechai Wieser received a 13-year franchise. During World War I, the theater was shut down by order of the Ottoman government on the pretext that its generator could be used to send messages to enemy submarines off shore. It reopened to the public during the British Mandate and became a hub of cultural and social activity. It closed down in 1974.[17] Mograbi Cinema, Tel Aviv[edit] The Mograbi Cinema (Kolnoa Mograbi) opened in 1930. It was designed in an art deco style that was popular in cinemas worldwide. The building was roofless for the first few years and was eventually topped with a sliding roof. People gathered in front of the theater to dance in the streets when the UN General Assembly voted in favor of the Partition Plan in November 1947. After a fire in the summer of 1986 due to an electric short-circuit, the building was demolished.[17] Armon Cinema, Haifa[edit] In 1931, Moshe Greidinger opened a cinema in Haifa. In 1935 he built a second movie theater, Armon, a large art-deco building with 1,800 seats that became the heart of Haifa's entertainment district. It was also used as a performance venue by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israeli Opera.[20] Alhambra Cinema, Jaffa[edit] The art deco Alhambra cinema, with seating for 1,100, opened in Jaffa in 1937. It was designed by a Lebanese architect, Elias al-Mor, and became a popular venue for concerts of Arab music. Farid al-Atrash and Umm Kulthum appeared there. In 2012, the historic building reopened as a Scientology center after two years of renovation.[21] Smadar Theater, Jerusalem[edit] The Smadar theater was built in Jerusalem's German Colony in 1928. It was German-owned and mainly served the British Army. In 1935, it opened for commercial screenings as the "Orient Cinema." It was turned over to Jewish management to keep it from being boycotted as a German business, infuriating the head of the Nazi Party branch in Jerusalem. After 1948, it was bought by four demobilized soldiers, one of them Arye Chechik, who bought out his partners in 1950.[22] According to a journalist who lived next door, Chechik sold the tickets, ran to collect them at the door and worked as the projectionist. His wife ran the concession stand.[23]. ***   ebay4752/174
