For your consideration, you are viewing an Antique Christopher Johnson Adelaide Cork Screw Spike / Ice Pick with Horn Handle and it makes an excellent and interesting Bar Utensil. This is a lovely example of the "Adelaide" corkscrew. This has a horn handle, with a spike on one end and the corkscrew attached under the centre of the horn.
This was manufactured in England in the late 19th century. The handles were made of goat horn with a nickel plated brass or German silver (white brass) ferrule or collar at the wider end of the horn. Also, at the cut end of the horn is a spike (wire breaker) used to break the wire or string that was often used to hold the cork in place, it has shaft passing through the handle using a square nut or rivet head mechanism to lock the metal corkscrew to the horn handle.
This Antique English-made Adelaide corkscrew design was registered in 1886 and manufactured by John Marshall, then trading as Christopher Johnson, of Sheffield. The shaft and spike are both stamped with the hallmark CJ (flag) and JOHNSON. #CHRISTOPHER J JOHNSON (CUTLERS) LTD: Christopher Johnson, born in Sheffield in 1809, started his cutlery business in 1836 in Howard Street SHEFFIELD. He brought new partners into the business, his nephew John Hibbert (c.1832-1908). In 1868, another partner, John Marshall, joined the business, and the title ‘& Co’ was added. Christopher died in May 1881, aged 72, Marshall and Hibbert took over the business. Hibbert died, aged 77, on 1 June 1908. Marshall became the owner of the business in the late nineteenth century. Sheffield Library has several Johnson trade catalogues. These show cutlery from table knives to hunting knives. Hand crafted with buffalo and stag horn handles. Johnson, Hibbert, and Marshall were described as ‘Australian merchants’. As in 1880, Johnson’s Cutlers won a gold medal at the Melbourne International Exhibition and then appointed an Australian agent, a Mr. J. W. Bunby, who developed a flourishing trade selling CJ Johnson Cutlery in the 1880s and 1890s.
#Corkscrews History: In the world of wine enthusiasts and collectors, the humble, yet essential corkscrews have a fascinating history and have become a must-have collectibles. Corkscrews date back many centuries and have been a vital bar utensil needed for the enjoyment of wine. The earliest known corkscrew designs date back to the 17th century, and are often made of iron and wood, featuring a simple metal helix that could be twisted into the cork to extract it from the bottle with a wooden T handle.
